Whenever Apple rolls out a new iOS, there’s usually some change that people invariably grumble about, and then eventually get used to. As such, with the release of 1OS 17, the company is making the biggest update to the iPhone’s phone app in years, and it’s definitely going to ruffle some feathers.

In addition to real-time “live voicemail” transcriptions and contact posters that allow users to choose which photo shows up when they call another person’s iPhone, the new app will feature an updated user interface with a bolder font. The new user interface will be streamlined going forward, eliminating the number of buttons from seven to six, and moving the red “end call” button.

Instead of the button to end a call appearing at the bottom center of the screen, where it has been for years, the new layout is moving it to the bottom right of the screen, clustered with the Speaker, FaceTime, Mute, Add Contact, and Keypad buttons. The button to access contacts will no longer appear on the call screen going forward in iOS 17.

CNBC has an image of what the new call screen looks like in iOS 17, which is currently in beta version.

When iOS 17 fully rolls out in the fall, the change is undoubtedly going to be frustrating for people who tend to make a lot of calls and rely on muscle memory to hang up.

The last time Apple made a major change to one of its basic user interfaces was back in 2021 with the beta version of iOS 15, which updated the design of the Safari browser and put the URL bar at the bottom of the screen. However, after being met with near immediate backlash, the company had already tweaked the design by the time the final version was released in September, allowing users the option to put the URL bar back on top.

A representative for Apple did not respond to CNBC’s request for comment about whether the new call screen might change back or become customizable.
