Martyn Pert was impressed by Ipswich Town’s ‘team performance’ as they beat League One outfit Bristol Rovers in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Blues made 11 changes from their win at Sunderland, but they took an early lead through summer signing Jack Taylor, who scored on his first competitive start for the club.

They dominated the game but struggled to double their lead, prompting manager Kieran McKenna to bring on George Hirst for the final 15 minutes.

He opened the game up and provided an assist for Sone Aluko, who wrapped up the victory with a confident finish into the bottom corner.

The number of changes wasn’t an issue for Ipswich then, as they put in a cohesive performance that secured an easy win, much to the delight of assistant boss Pert.

“It was very pleasing,” he said. “It was a good performance. Obviously we’re through to the next round, so it was good to get the result.

“I thought the performance was good, particularly because we changed the whole team.

“It shows the level that the lads have been working at for the last six weeks, that they can understand the structure and everything we want, to go and put in a performance like that.

“A lot of the players have been here a while, so they understand the way we’re going to play, but we have Jack [Taylor], Omari [Hutchinson], the goalkeeper Cieran [Slicker], that have all come into the team.

“Elkan [Baggott] hasn’t played a lot for us. He was away last year on loan.

“For those players in particular, to come into the team and play in a similar structure to how we normally play, was really pleasing. It was a good night.”

It means that Town have started the campaign with two wins, having picked up all three points from their trip to the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Most of the squad have now been involved in a positive performance in at least one of the two games, something that Pert believes is cause for optimism in the early stages of the new season.

“The win at the weekend certainly brings confidence because we did it in a different way,” he explained. “We showed resilience against a tough opponent at a tough place to go and win.

“Sometimes, when you change the whole team, the games don’t go particularly well because the continuity isn’t there in the performance.

“The continuity was fantastic tonight and I thought it was a real team performance because we made so many changes. There’ll be so much confidence.”
