So this is one of those movies that came out of the reboot/remake trend a decade ago, and I was wondering people’s opinions on it. There were so many terrible remakes at this time that I think almost everyone one of them was either a flop or a disappointment.

I’m personally a huge fan of the Cyberpunk genre, I have been since the 90’s, and I think what this movie did well at was diving deeper into that aesthetic for the remake.

Generally I find the CGI to be really good, and the environmental design to be in good faith of what the genre is about. And while the original Total Recall didn’t have as much aesthetic as something like Blade Runner, being based on another book by Phillip K. Dick (We Can Remember It For You Wholesale), something just feels right about how this was made.

But arguably, it’s not the most gripping movie in the world, we all know the premise of the story, it makes a good stage for an action movie, and ultimately that’s what this is. But I don’t mind that because I think everything else this movie does, it does it right. I like the plot, I like how they created a whole new world problem, I like how the movie flows from scene to scene until it’s finale.

Even though it’s not the best movie ever, I’ve watched this multiple times just because it’s such an easy and enjoyable watch, and I absolutely will watch it again. It’s one of those movies for when you’re in the mood for some Cyberpunk but you don’t have the attention span for the slower noir narrative of something like Blade Runner, you can get the same immersion without having to pay too much attention to the story.

So what are your thoughts? Do you like it? Do you think it did the original story justice? How do you think it did as a remake? I’m really curious to hear people’s thoughts.
